Literature Text

The girl staggered through the urban streets like a drunkard; delirium took over her and she huffed as if there was some sort of oxygen deficiency. Her warm breaths were exposed in the nippy air as they rose like tiny puffs of fog.  Her clenched fist grew paler and paler as she held it against her chest. Her heart was heavy and she felt weak with weary legs.

How could this have happened? How could she have ever allowed such simple mishaps to change her life and herself in every way possible? How was she, Ann Madela, going to get through this all on her own? As these and more questions were said and repeated in Ann’s head, she regained composure as she walked on, but remained somewhat winded and aloof. She made her way into more suburban areas, not that she planned on going anywhere in particular. Although any place away from home did seem appealing at that moment.

It had all started during Ann’s worst summer vacation ever. Ann’s mother, her only parent, had lost her job. On top of that, the company that her mother had worked for accused her under suspicions of embezzlement. Finding a new, well-paying job proved difficult especially when the cross-fire of ridiculous legal accusations were looming over her shoulder. The possibility of the mother’s defense attorney failing them suddenly became a new fear in the household. And as if hiding the truth from Ann’s two younger siblings was already enough trouble, the money for food, mortgage, bills and schooling had suddenly doubled its thorny weight upon their backs. Soon, it would come to a point where Ann had to drop out of college in order to help financially support her family.

She spaced out as she continued her hasty sojourn, her eyes stuck to the path she walked on. They had no concern or care in them; the emotions that were sharp and poignant a few minutes ago began to die down into a blunt, numbing sensation in her gut. They were muffled explosions going off like fireworks, but hidden in obscurity. The brunette knew all of her life that bottling up problems would yield emotionally unhealthy outcomes but at that point she wasn’t left with a luxury of choices. All sorts of thoughts and familiar scenarios were swirling in her head as she passed by a walkway with distorted graffiti tainting the walls of some buildings. She continued forth on her walk.
